Archive for the month “May, 2012”

Goals are simply things that you want to achieve in your life. Having goals is essential in life. If you don’t have goals, you don’t have anything to aim for. If you don’t have goals you are likely to keep going around in around in circles not achieving anything and wondering why you’re not happy.

You can have goals can be in any area of your life. Self development, Career, Relationships, Hobbies, Travel, Material possessions. They can be big goals or small goals, having both are good. Long term goals and things you want to achieve straight away.

Here’s a really quick way to decide and implement goals.

1) What have you been wanting to do for a long time but have been putting off?

2) Write it down! This is a very important phase in goal setting.

3) Write down WHY you want to achieve this goal

4) Write down WHEN you are going to achieve this goal.

5) Put this goal on a piece of paper and hang it somewhere where you can see it all the time to remind you. Set the date that this goal is to be met in your calendar and set reminders for yourself.

Start with a simple goal. I’ll give you an example.

1) I’ve been looking at my wardrobe every morning for the last 3 months thinking there’s just so many clothes in here that I just don’t wear. I must get rid of these clothes. (To make space for new ones! LOL)

2) I wrote down on a index card “Clean out wardrobe”

3) “To make more room”

4) “By Sunday 27th May, 2012”

5) I stuck this on my wardrobe so that I could see it everyday. Everyday I put something in a box that I knew I’d never wear again. On the Saturday I knew I had to have my goal completed by Sunday so I spent the day listening to my favourite music, singing and dancing around while I did a thorough clean out of my wardrobe and on the Sunday I took these boxes down to the local charity store.

See how I also made this goal fun by listening to music. I actually really enjoyed doing it. It also made me feel good about myself that I would be helping others out by giving away my clothes.

These two things are important in goal setting strategies, try and make them as fun as possible and think of the positive impact it will have on others.

What is Self Development?

Many people are avid readers of self development books, but what is it exactly that people are looking for? Happiness. That’s it, people really want to know how to be happy, how to create their own happiness, fulfillment and success, whatever success means to you personally.

The aim of self development, or personal development is to strive to improve your knowledge of yourself and achieve your full potential. The more self aware you are the more capable you are of deciding what it is that you want in life and take steps in achieving this.

Most people just know what they don’t want. They are the ones always complaining but never doing anything about it. The people that are always unhappy and always blaming others, their boss, their spouse, society, government, etc.

If you go down the road of self development, you will learn more about yourself, what you want and don’t want then you will move forward by actually doing something about it. You will stop whinging and start making a better life for yourself.

You will start focusing on what you DO want. When you know what you DO want then you can start acting on that, start planning what you have to do to get from point A, where you are now, unhappy. To point B, where you wish to be, happy, fulflled, and successful.

How To Be Successful.

Success to me is enjoying life. I don’t think life is meant to be a struggle. I genuinely believe that we are here to have a delightful life.

Often when I ask people what success means to them they will rattle of the thingsthey want in life, they think they will have success when they get this or that. There’s nothing wrong with wanting things that you will get pleasure from, but that is secondary. If you are enjoying life then you are successful.

One of the ways in which you can become more successful in life, that is to enjoy life is to find your purpose in life. I don’t mean this in a metaphysical sense, I mean doing what you love and loving what you do and making a living out of this. Your purpose becomes your job, your profession. If you love your work then it doesn’t feel like work at all.

There is no one else in the world exactly like you. No one with the same personality and characteristics, with the same outlook on life, no one can explain things the way you do. You are unique and you have a gift to share with the world, this is your purpose, to be your authentic self.

I believe when we come into this world we know who we are, we know what we want to have and what we want to do. We know what our purpose is. We believed in ourselves and we trusted ourselves. Then the process of social conditioning started, social conditioning is “a sociological process of training individuals in a society to act or respond in a manner generally approved by the society in general and peer groups within society.”

Instead of developing our unique abilities and aspirations we began to do what other people expected of us, we started doing what other people wanted us to do and being what other people wanted us to be. We have an inner war going on, a conflict between what we really want and what we think we have to do because it is more practical, or because we have been told we can’t do what we want to do.

Isn’t it time we started to honour our true self. The way towards success is to rediscover your true self, consciously choose the life you want to live. Decide for yourself what is important in your life, what you value and start setting goals and taking steps towards living your life with purpose, enjoying your life. Follow your heart, follow your dreams. Stop listening to other people, it’s your life and all that matters is what is going to make you happy. Your aim is to do what fulfills you.

A good place to start is to look at your values. Click HERE to get  a comprehensive list of values under the resources list. The next 3 steps will help you on your way to becoming your authentic self, enjoying your life and becoming successful.

  1. Go through the list, writing down what you value.

For many people this will be the first time that they have actually sat down and really thought about what they value. Up until now it hasn’t been clear to them at all.

2. Narrow the list down to your top 5-10 most important values. These will be what you feel most passionate about. You will get a rush of excitement or a feeling of peace or you may feel relief that you have discovered this. Almost always there will be some kind of emotional response when you discover what you think is truely important to have in your life.

3. Under each value write down why you this value is important to you. Ask yourself why is this important to me? What does this mean to me? Often people will find themselves writing things like ‘my father said I should…..’, ‘society expects this of me’, ‘all my friends do this’. You discover that you have based your life’s decisions on something you don’t care for.

You now have the ability to consciously choose what it is you value in life and start planning your new life, your new direction, your new goals around your true values. Be the successful person you were meant to be, enjoy life by discovering your true self and living authentically.

“Everything you have experienced has served a purpose.”

“Everything you have ever experienced in your life has served a purpose: it has brought you here, to this exact point. Your struggles and your survival and your tragedies and your triumphs brought you here. Tho this night. To this moment.” Brendon Burchard.

As someone who has been studying Self development, Personal development and Self Help for nearly 20 years this quote helped me to focus on the positive things in my life.

I had been thinking about the struggles I had gone through and was getting upset as I remembered the pain and torment I had gone though over the years. I have been shocked at the nastiness of some people and the terrible things that have been said and done to me. I read this quote and I understood why I had to go through these experiences. I have always been an avid student of self development. I have studied rigorously, and read widely. I have always tried to understand myself more closely and learn how to improve my life.

Personal development is a passion of mine. I now read with fervour and enthusiasm like never before. I absorb and understand the concepts in what I study more easily and am able to apply them effectively. The more I learn the more I can help other people. The more training programs I can provide and the more people I can reach. My purpose is to help others get through the struggles and come out the other side a happier person with a more fulfilling life. A person who knows who they are and want they want. A person that can easily and effortlessly express their authentic self.

If it were not for my struggles and the triumphs, if it were not for the experiences I have gone through, both painful and pleasurable I would not be here now, reaching out to those who want to help themselves. I am grateful for all the people and all the experiences in my life and although I have not achieved a state where I am able to forgive certain malicious behaviour but I have learnt how to deal with it, how to move on and how to enjoy my life. My desire is to help others do the same. Without these experiences I would not be in a position of being able to help others. I would not have discovered my purpose in life and I would not be living my authentic life with passion.
